About London Irish Rugby Club
Founded in 1898, London Irish Rugby Club developed into a professional club in 1996. The club has its home based in Sunbury-on-Thames since 1931 and it's located in Sunbury, Surrey, when the rugby club bought almost 11 acres of land off the Avenue Road for a considerable amount to money. At present, the London Irish Club boasts of four pitches and has frequent training and play-offs for both professionals and amateur players and squads. This is evident during the season when the arena echoes with the droves of mini rugby players and their coaches taking the grounds for practice and games.
London Irish or The Exiles, as they are also known, play home matches at the impressive Madejski Stadium that has a capacity of 24,250 in Reading and the club usually participates in the top tier of English rugby union, that is the Aviva Premiership. Together with that, London Irish also participates in the Anglo-Welsh Cup and either one of the two European club competitions- the European Challenge Cup or the Heineken Cup, based on their match performance in the earlier season. London Irish claimed its very first major trophy in 2002, when they won the Powergen Cup that later became the Anglo-Welsh Cup.
Initially aimed for the young Irishmen of London, London Irish have their kits in white and green and the rugby club's mascot is an Irish wolfhound named Digger. Till today, London Irish have held a strong affinity with rugby fans and any rugby aficionados visiting London will not want to miss out on a home game of The Exiles.
