University of Greenwich's origins began in 1890, when the Woolwich Polytechnic in Britain opened with the aim of teaching the commercial and practical skills for the workers in London. With many institutions joining hands with the polytechnic, it was able to gather expertise in a wide scope of subject areas. In 1970, its name was changed to Thames Polytechnic and once again in 1992 to the current, University of Greenwich once it was approved of university status. Presently, University of Greenwich has three campuses; Avery Hill in Eltham, Greenwich in London borough near River Thames and Medway in Chatham Maritime.
This University is which pioneered the current concept of part-time and sandwich courses. It offers a wide range of courses that include Business, Engineering, Architecture, Teacher Training and History and provides a first class research environment. The university has attracted a diverse international student population from over 140 countries. This university provides highly professional training opportunities for its staff, thus ensuring an excellent quality of education.
The university provides its own accommodation either on or near the main campuses. Currently they have 2,300 rooms either with en-suite or sharing facilities, but self-catering.
The Student Union of the University of Greenwich makes a student's university life more memorable and exciting. Having the membership card of the Student Union which hold both its and National Union of Students' logo, enables students to obtain over 35,000 discounts over 116 countries on goods and services. It provides cafes and bars for relaxing and organizes different clubs and society events for recreation.
