About Royal Holloway University of London
Located in Egham, Surrey; Royal Holloway was founded by a Victorian philanthropist Thomas Holloway, on the Mount Lee Estate in 1879. Initially, named the Holloway College, it was declared open by Queen Victoria as a women-only college. It became a constituent of the London University in 1900 and since 1945 male students were also admitted. It has had a remarkable reputation for its excellence in teaching and in 2009 however The Times Good University Guide, ranked the Royal Holloway College as the 30th in UK (11th in 2007), but still in the top 10s for research (RAE 2008). Graduates from this university are also deemed to be in the lowest unemployment rates of 3.2%.
Currently, the Royal Holloway comprises of 3 faculties; Faculty of Arts, Faculty of History and Social Sciences and Faculty of Sciences, which are divided into 18 departments. It has many programs including both single and joint honours. This university also makes provisions for scholarships and in certain cases, gives students free places if they are completing a postgraduate degree in RHUL.
The campus has its halls for accommodation around its premises, however the first year students are given priority. The meals for residents are catered for along with other facilities necessary for a comfortable study life.
Royal Holloway Students' Union (SURHUL) is responsible for providing the most of the on campus entertainment, by organizing various activities through clubs and societies and student counselling. According to The Independent, SURHUL is supposed to be one of the best unions in the London area.
