About Imperial College London

Imperial College London is a former Constituent college of the University of London and is one of Britain's top colleges for science, technology, medicine and engineering. It falls in the top 10 Universities world wide.

The main campus of the University is located in Kensington and Central London, and is built on the largest estate of land in UK that is used for educational purposes. The beginning's of the university dates back to the 15th century. It has its origins in a seminary and also in agriculture. Later on in the 19th Century hospitals joined the college and thus the medical aspect to it was established. Later on the City and Guilds College, the Royal School of Mines, and the Royal College of Science also followed suit and now form what is the Imperial College of London. After this expansion the college met with much success, from its launch of the Imperial College Press to the awards it was winning for scientific research. This prompted the College to prefer to be an independent University rather than a constituent college, and in July 2007 it started its own undergraduate and post-graduate programs.

In terms of facilities and recreation the extensive estate was used for projects such as the Ethos Sports Centre and expanded halls of residence, a new central library and the reconstruction of the south-eastern sector of the campus.

In its new University format the college offers undergraduate and postgraduate education in Engineering, Medicine and Natural Sciences. Now it has also expanded its teaching towards Humanities(more elective based), and invested in a new Imperial College Business School. Overall the college is very selective and requires a 3A grades at A/Level in order to receive admission, with only approximately 20% of applicants receiving a favourable response. The student body however comprises of +12,000 students both in under and post graduate courses. 29% of full-time students come from outside the European Union and this results in a cosmopolitan feel at the campus.

Students reside on campus in one of the 30 halls of residence that are at the College. This amounts to over 3,000 rooms which are mainly occupied by international First-year students. The majority of older students seek accommodation privately for which provisions have been made at the Accommodations office.

The college although very educationally focused also has an active students union, with over 300 clubs and societies which is the largest number in England. They also run a TV segment on the local network, have a radio station and print a news-letter. The University is well reputed, and is definitely forming a niche for itself in League tables.
