About Kensington Gardens

Kensington gardens, once known as the private gardens of Kensington palace, originally part of Hyde Park which was bought by William III in 1698.  It covers an area of 111 hectares that lies immediately to the west of Hyde Park. It is one of the Royal Parks and is situated mostly in the City of Westminister, The Gardens are fenced unlike Hyde Park and are open only during the day time.

Kensington Gardens was carved right out of the western section of Hyde Park, Which took Henry Wise and Charles Bridgeman 10 years to design, which includes a “Round pond” where you can find insect such as three-spined sticklebacks, roach, gudgeon and eels. The Garden is well known for its 178 species of birds, one of these birds is the Green Woodpecker. This type of bird is rarely sited in Central London which makes Kensington Gardens a likely place to find birdwatchers.

Kensington Gardens is popular for sunbathing and picnics when the sun is out. Cycling is allowed on the path that's assigned to it, linking the Queens Gate to the West Carriage drive. You will also find a lot of commuters on their way to work on this route. This path is also very usually used by joggers and runners. The park also consists of two children's playgrounds, and a café that serves great flatbread pizza, great salads, wraps and sweet treats, along with sodas, low-fat yoghurt sundaes, tea and coffee.

The garden's avenues and architecture have been used in romantic comedies. The fountains in the Italian Garden near Bayswater Road, the Albert Memorial off Kensington Gore and the Serpentine Gallery have all featured films in the past ten years. The garden is most famous for the film Finding Neverland. This is the story of the novelist J M Barrie, who was inspired to write Peter Pan during afternoon strolls in the Gardens more than 100 years ago.
