Hampstead Heath
About Hampstead Heath
Hampstead Heath (referred as "the Heath") is London's biggest, ancient parkland, covering 320 hectares. It is one of London's most admired open spaces, located six kilometres from Trafalgar Square. This grassy public space is located astride a sandy crest, one of the highest points in London, running from Hampstead to Highgate. Heath is rambling and hilly, embracing ponds, recent and primitive woodlands, a lido, playgrounds, and a training track. South of the Heath is Parliament Hill, whose outlook over London is protected by law.
The Heath has been a well liked place for Londoners to walk and take the air. Along its eastern periphery are a chain of ponds including three open air swimming pools, which were initially reservoirs for drinking water from the river. With its beginning in former countryside, long recognized features such as hedgerows and ancient trees provide links with the past. The range of wildlife is remarkable for an urban site visited by so many people. Kingfishers, reed warblers and all three species of British woodpecker breed. Over 300 species of fungi have been recorded and it is one of the best places in London to see a number of species of bats. The location Kenwood is known as a site for special scientific interest, which is the smallest site in London. Lakeside concerts are held during the summer period.
