About The Garden Museum

This Garden Museum is a museum that specializes in gardens, as the name suggests and also a first of its kind!!! Formerly known as the Museum of Garden History, it was established in 1977. The museum is housed at the St Mary-at-Lambeth church bordering the Lambeth Palace on the southern bank of the Thames River situated at the Lambeth Road.

This Victorian Church housed many of the 15th and 16th century tombs of the Howard family including the Duke and Duchess of Norfolk. This was scheduled to be demolished, when John and Rosemary Nicholson discovered the tomb of the gardeners to the church on inspection which inspired creation of the Garden Museum. The museum has tools; ranging from specialist to improvised tools, ceramics, ephemera, photographs, paintings etc., and a library that has a vast pool of information on gardening and history. It also has a famous knot garden and organizes many exhibitions.

Tickets range from £6 to free based on age and membership. It is open on Sunday-Friday from 10.30am-5.00pm and on Saturday from 10.30am-4.00pm, but closed on first Mondays of every month. The buildings are disabled accessible.
