About London Transport Museum

Have you ever wondered how many horses it took to help run London's transport system? Or how the earliest trolleybuses looked? Or how an Oyster Card works?

To find out the answers to these questions and to look behind the scenes at the science of London's transport systems from the past to the present, make a trip to The London Transport Museum located in Covent Garden, London.

Displaying many examples of buses, trams, trolleybuses and rail vehicles from 19th and 20th centuries as well as artifacts and exhibits related to the operation and marketing of passenger services and the impact that the developing transport network has had on the city and its population. The London Transport Museum tells the story of public transport and the development of London over the last 200 years. From walking, cycling, taxis and river transport as well as buses, trams and the Underground- all modes of transport are covered at the museum.

The entrance to the museum is from the Covent Garden Piazza, amongst the Piazza's many tourist attractions. The museum is within walking distance from both Covent Garden tube station and Charring Cross railway station.

The main site in Covent Garden is open to the public every day, having recently reopened following a two year refurbishment. The other site, located in Acton, is known as the “London Transport Museum Depot” and is principally a storage site that is open on regular visitor days throughout the year.

The new exhibition themes include transport art and design heritage; public transport at war; London's massive expansion during the 20th century; and world city comparisons.

Visit the museum and experience the fascinating stories of the lives of Londoners and the development of the Capital over the last 200 years. It will be an endeavor you will never forget!
