The market traces its history back to the 14th century. It is built on the centre of ancient Roman London and originally was a meat, game and poultry market. The green and maroon ornate roof structure and the present cobbled floors were designed in 1881 by Sir Horace Jones in order to make the market a tourist attraction. In fact this market was used to represent the area of London near The Leaky Cauldron and Diagon Alley in the film Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
