About Whitechapel Art Gallery

The Whitechapel Art Gallery is situated at the northern side of the Whitechapel High Street, built for temporary exhibitions in London. Built in 1902, it has housed many open-housed exhibitions for the artist community of the area. It is said to be one of the first publicly funded galleries in London.

The most important exhibition held in here was in 1956 of the post war British Art; called “This is Tomorrow”. The Whitechapel has housed exhibitions of many highly recognized artists like Nan Godlin, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Gilbert & George and so forth. Being one of the ancient landmarks of London, it certainly has done a great job in shaping the culture of London especially the art attributes of Eastern London. It also acts as an educational charity, to shape the futures of the artists in London and around the world. In 2009, it was reopened after a two year expansion project.

Admissions are free for most of the exhibitions. They have quite many planned out and visiting their website before hand would definitely give you the exact program. The Whitechapel Art Gallery is open everyday except for Monday, from 11.00am to 6.00pm. On Fridays however, the Late Night Music program is carried out at the bar/cafe from 8.00pm till 11.00pm, which is charged.

The easiest way to get here is through the nearest tube station; Aldgate East and they also allow group visits and school visits, which would be definitely fun!!!
