About Windsor Castle

A visit to the worlds' oldest and largest occupied castle is an experience every visitor to London should not miss. Located on a beautiful setting overlooking the River Thames, the Windsor Castle boasts of a proud history of nearly 1000 years. The castle is an official residence of The British Monarch. If you are lucky enough, during your visit you will be able to catch a glimpse of your favorite royalty, perhaps even of Her Majesty The Queen, who spends many of her weekends in the castle.

As you enter the castle grounds, you see many couples taking a stroll along the magnificent tree lined avenue (more than 5km long) and Virginia water, a lovely artificial lake. It is a treat to both mind and body which all visitors should experience. A kid running about getting ready to take one of the many family activity trails or audio tours the Castle provides for its visitors is a very common sight. The array of various family activities and workshops during school holidays and weekends has made the castle a much sought after family destination.

Many areas of The Windsor Castle are open to the public. As you wander along the magnificent State Apartments, furnished with some of the finest works of art from the royal collection, you are swept off your feet to the age old times when Kings and Queens and princes and princesses would have dined and danced in those very halls. You can also visit the world famous Queen Mary's Dolls' House, a masterpiece in miniature. St. George's Chapel, one of the most beautiful ecclesiastical buildings in England and the burial place of 10 monarchs is a must see. During the winter months an additional five rooms, known collectively as the Semi-State Rooms, are included in the visitor route. When The Queen is in official residence and on alternate days (except Sundays), Changing of the Guard provides a colorful spectacle in the quadrangle.

As Windsor Castle is a working royal palace, the opening arrangements and times are subject to change with short notice. So, by checking before planning a visit you can avoid the disappointment and make the expedition a memorable one.
