Surrey County Cricket Club is among the 18 professional major clubs in domestic structure of English cricket. They play the majority of their home matches at The Oval cricket ground in Kennington that can accommodate a massive crowd (of) well over 23, 000 spectators. According to history, Surrey cricket club was introduced to cricket somewhere in the late 15th century and it grew in popularity in the 17th century. Surrey played its debut game against the Marylebone Cricket Club in 1846. The name of the team who represent Surrey county in the limited overs tournaments is called the Surrey Lions.
The period of highest success came between the years 1997 and 2003 under the captaincy of Adam Hollioake. They also emerged as winners of the championship title in 1998 under his captaincy having previously won it way back in 1971. Surrey have had some of the best international cricketers playing for them and some notable names include Geoff Howarth, Waqar Younis, Alec Stewart and Saqlain Mushtaq, to name a few.
Surrey has also managed to break a record: The highest score in 50 overs that was achieved against Gloucestershire in the 2008 season. They accumulated a mass total of 496 that remains the highest ever score in 50 over cricket. Other major achievements of Surrey are the County Championship title, Twenty20 and Pro40 titles. Up to date, Surrey have won the official County Championship 18 times in total, making it the second most successful English county cricket club.
